There are many reasons why you might want to create an online photography portfolio. People often associate a portfolio with the old paper in a folder version, and these are still a great way to showcase your work. However, thanks to computers and technology, we can now create an online version. Drawings, sketches, paintings and any other artwork you choose can be scanned and copied and put in your portfolio. What you put in it is up to you and is not limited to just photographs.

Always try to keep in mind to whom you’ll be sharing your portfolio with.

- Is this for a job interview?
- Is this for a large group or an individual?
- Is the art appropriate for the audience?
- What do I want my audience to get out of my work?

Having a clear vision of your audience and goals will put the whole process into perspective for you.

Of course you’ll want to choose the best pieces to put in your portfolio. That may seem easy enough, right? However, if you’re like most artists, you’re probably your toughest critic. Choosing which artwork does not have to be a daunting task though. If you have several types of photographs, one of the easiest and best ways is to categorize your works. For instance:

- One page with all black and white photos.
- One page with all sepia toned photos.
- A page with all your nature scenes.
- A page with all photos of people or children.
- A page of photos that are completely different from what you normally do.

Do you get the idea? Again, this is not limited to just photographs. Artwork is a photograph taken with your mind and copied with your hand. Furthermore, do not allow the fear that your work is “not good enough” enter your mind. Doing something is better than doing nothing.

You know your audience and have chosen your work. Now it’s time to create your portfolio. If money is an issue; then there are plenty of free and low cost do-it-yourself websites. A graphic-designer can also create a very impressive portfolio and website for you. For safety though, add a small watermark logo to your photos to avoid others from copying your work.

Finally, keep it fun. This does not have to be a chore, but should be considered part of your creativity. Your artwork and photographs are amazing; others will think so too.

Photography is one of the most rewarding and exciting careers or hobbies. The process in endless and this day and age the alterations that can be made to each picture are boundless. In other words, the possibilities to what can be done within the field of photography and the chances one has for creativity simply increase with more pictures one takes. One downside to photography as a hobby is that it can get fairly expensive. If one were to take into account all of the equipment needed to have control over every aspect of photo development, the costs could go well up into the hundreds. This is especially true if one is interested in film photography rather than digital photography. However, these costs can be avoided if one knows where to get good deals on photography equipment.

One of the first places to look for when looking for such reduced prices is stores such as National Camera Exchange. Although generally speaking much of the equipment in these stores are very expensive, they often have large discount sections. Here one can find reduced prices on everything from camera lenses, camera bodies, film paper, cleaning solutions and much, much more.

Generally speaking, of course, the best place to look for cheaper (yet good quality) photography equipment is online. Many times used cameras, lenses, tripods and other things are put on sale online for highly reduced prices. Of course buying camera equipment online raises some concerns for most photographers. However, generally speaking the things sold on amazon or ebay are in good shape, great quality and most people continue to use these already used gadgets for years after purchase.

Still another great place to find great deals on photography equipment is photography fairs. Here, photographers from around the area come together to show off what they have, what they have worked on and to sell some of the things they do not need for very low prices. This is a great alternative from the other two options because one gets to talk to the owners of the products on sale and discuss some of the difficulties and advantages of that particular piece.

Bottom line is that the high price of photography equipment does not have to stop people from practicing the amazing art. If one looks around enough, one will find that circumventing these prices is possibly without sacrificing the quality of the photographs one can produce.

The first time the word photography was used was back in 1839 by a man called Sir John F. W. Herschel. At the time, the word meant to record the actions of images taken in light.

The actual first photograph taken was in 1827. A man called Joseph Niepce created this image using what was called a camera obscura. Before this first photograph, the camera was used only to look at or draw things, not to produce photos. The sun prints that Niepce created were the very beginning of the new world of photography. He developed a way to douse the engraved item into liquid and expose it to light and continued to research until the picture or image would finally appear. At that time it was close to 8 hours before the image would appear. Not long after he had his image, it would disappear.

Soon after, inventor Daguerre partnered with Niepce to help develop the process of photography. The two of them came up with a better process and called this daguerreotype after Daguerre. His process seemed to lock the image on a piece of copper and was topped with iodine. The image was then exposed and covered with light and silver chloride. This way of producing the image allowed the image to not fade if light was exposed to it. By the year 1850, there were numerous studios using the daguerreotype photography process.
Later on in 1889, a film was produced that could be rolled up and didn’t break. George Eastman was the inventor of this flexible film.

The 1940’s was the year that color photography came into play. Much more modern technology was applied to films using some dye colors and a process of chemically connecting layers of colors together to put into the image.

With much more advancement, T grain emulsion films have now been formed that allow much better grain patterns. Images are more crisp and sharp.

With the ongoing sophistication of digital photography and photo-editing software, capturing that perfect image is increasingly more probable than possible. Knowing what it is you’d like to photograph is the first step toward achieving a stellar photograph. Using a tripod and understanding the following concepts in photography will help you toward your goal.

Composition

1. Point of View: Select what it is you wish to photograph whether it be an old barn in a field, or an anticipated glorious sunset. Consider from what viewpoint would be of greater impact for the desired image. Depending on the subject, experiment through the view-finder in the camera with different angles and distances to see what best enhances the subject.

2. Balancing Components: When composing your image, try using the rule of thirds when photographing strong elements. Instead popping the main subject smack into the center of the photo, balance the strength of the main object off to one side or the other while bringing in another object of lesser impact into the scene. This softens the subject, yet still allows it to be the main theme.

3. Framing The Scene: This works particularly well with landscape scenes. For example, using trees and mountainsides to frame an alpine lake around the outer edges of a photograph is an excellent example of framing a scene.

Lighting

1. Natural Lighting: Outside or landscape photography largely depends on being aware of the subtleties of sunlight throughout the day, and exactly what it is you wish to photograph. Universally, early mornings and late afternoons are favored because of the lower, warmer light that produces intriguing and slight shadowing on the subject. Mid-day sunshine may produce more of a challenge with its brightness and high contrast.

2. Existing Lighting: This type of lighting is an extension more or less of natural lighting, but pertains to objects such as windows, ceiling lights, candles, neon lights, and car headlights. It’s basically any type of light except direct outdoor light.

3. Using Flash Lighting: This is generally accomplished in photographing portraits using strobe flash and reflectors to even out the light on the subject.

Post Production

1. Downloading Photographs: Most digital cameras come with abbreviated versions of some sort of photo-editing software, so first step is to download your photos into your photo software program.

2. Select The Winners: Pick out which photographs that appeal most to you and are ones that you feel you can work with post productively.

3. Contrast, Color, Black and White Balance: These are probably the most important aspects in tempering your digital photos to achieve the outcome you wish for. This is a personal choice and practicing with the available tools will help with discovering what works for you in producing the end-product photograph that you desire.

Winter photographers likely know that you have a lot of potential for great shots in between the snow, the ice and the cold. However, if you’re willing to brave the elements there are some amazing things you can see… if you can properly calibrate your photos and carefully compose your shots. While not all-inclusive, there are some good pieces of advice to be found below.

Check your light composition. Winter has great light, but there is a lot of it during the late afternoon and early mornings, and that much light can be a blessing or a curse. You need to carefully moderate how much light your pictures get, because too much can lead to colors being washed out and the sharp edges of things looking soft and grainy. This can be especially tricky because snow reflects light, and that’s why you need to carefully check your exposure and your angles before you just start snapping away.

Set your white balance before you start shooting. If there is just too much white in a picture, as is common when it comes to taking pictures in the snow, your pictures may very well turn out looking blue as a way to compensate. If your camera has a snow shooting mode then make sure you activate it before you start taking pictures and you should have much better and much clearer shots by the time you’ve finished snapping.

Be aware of temperature and its effects on your equipment. If you’re going to be out for any length of time in the winter remember that cold can sap the power right out of electronics, including digital cameras and battery powered accessories. So if you have a hike in front of you, or if you’re planning on being outside in the winter for an extended period of time, make sure that you bring spare power sources and take care to keep an eye on equipment that can’t get wet.

These are just a few of the things you have to keep in mind when taking your pictures in the winter time. However, if you compensate for temperature, light and the sheer amount of white that snow can bring then you are well on your way to cleaner, clearer photos.

If one wants to know how to become a professional photographer, then there are a few things that they can do to help them become one.

The first thing a person will want to do is invest into a good camera and take a few courses on photography. High def digital cameras are the best kinds of cameras to get if a person’s goal is to become a professional photographer. As far as courses go, a person only needs to maybe take two weeks worth of classes in order to fine tune their photography talent. But to find a photography tutor just search “photography lesson San Francisco” online to get even better technique.

A person who wants to be a professional photographer needs to create a portfolio of their work. This will allow them to show their work to potential customers. This will tell potential customers and clients that you have what it takes to meet their photography needs. It is a good idea if a person takes around a hundred of their best photos and create a portfolio with those photos.

A person who is aspiring to be a professional photographer should take photos of all types of things and then determine what types of photos are their strong point and then stick with taking such photos. If a person is great or has natural talent when it comes to taking photos of landscape and buildings, then this is the area of photography they should go into and establish themselves as a professional in the area of taking photos of buildings and landscapes.

Location is very important when it comes to making a living as a professional photographer. Locations such as New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago are some of the best locations to go to. The reason for this is because these cities are home to many people who adore photography. All types of photography lovers live in these cities, so it makes sense to be in such places as there will be more work for professional photographers in such cities.

People that go on vacation also have a desire to bring back memories. They want to relive the moment through the photos that they take. Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words if it’s taken correctly. The following gives a few points on how to take great pictures during a vacation.

Get the Right Camera before Departing

The first thing that you must do is get a camera that is good for action shots. Some of the best pictures will come from spontaneous moments with movement. A person that is only planning to do organized poses for pictures will miss out on the best photo opportunities. It’s okay for things to get a little messy. Every photo doesn’t have to be picture perfect. You will be surprised how the action shots will define your trip. The best photo memories are the spontaneous ones.

Take Your Surroundings into Consideration

Whenever you are posing for pictures you should take your surroundings into consideration. Try to take pictures in front of monuments or hotels. Look for the abstract or unique building designs to add some life to your photos. Sometimes this is the only way to jog your memory on where the picture was taken.

It can be a real joy to look back on photos and remember the places that you visited. These different background elements can help you visual the scenery of the trip.

Get Everyone Involved

Sometimes it’s hard to get everyone in the picture. Parents may have teenagers that shy away from the camera. Husbands may have wives that don’t want to get in a picture without their makeup. There will always be some sort of excuse, but everyone should get involved. A family can usually get a random person to take their picture as they pose. The complete family doesn’t have to be in every shot, but it is nice to incorporate everyone during some point in the vacation.

Take Pictures during Different Times of the Day

Don’t get settled with taking all of the pictures during the day. It is true that photos are much clearer during the day, but some of the night time pictures can also be good. It takes a little creativity, but a dark photo can also be interesting. A good flash will be needed to pull it off, but it’s definitely a good way to add variety to your collection.
